Ronald Paul Herring was born on March 19, 1946 in Moline, Illinois to Hubert Francis and Margaret Faye (Jones) Herring. He grew up in Moline and at an early age developed a love for basketball. He was a 1964 graduate of Moline High School where he was an All-State basketball player. He then attended the University of North Dakota where he continued his basketball career and earned Hall of Fame honors with the 1966 basketball team. He graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1969. It was during this same time that something else caught his eye. He met and married Mary Corwin on June 15, 1968 in Fargo, North Dakota. Two children were born to this union, Shelly and Robert.
Ron worked as a teacher and basketball coach completed this career at Fargo (ND) South High School. He continued his career managing a chain of motels, ending it as a financial planner.
Above all Ron loved spending time with his family, especially at their summer home on Lake Melissa, MN. Coming in a close second was his love of sports. Time spent with like-minded family members participating, watching, or discussing sporting events was one of his favorite pastimes. He also enjoyed working with kids. Following his retirement, he spent 5 years volunteering in the classroom at Orchard Hill Elementary in Cedar Falls IA. Upon moving to Maquoketa, he volunteered with both boys' and girls' basketball teams as well as his grandchildren's traveling basketball teams. He loved golf. He was very proud to shoot his age each of the past 4 years and delighted to see his grandchildren taking up the sport. He was pleased to be close enough for monthly lunches with his Moline HS friends.
