Margaret Jean "Peggy" Bartelt, 70, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 22, 2021, at Crestridge Nursing Home in Maquoketa, Iowa, complications of cerebral amyloid angiopathy.

Due to the COVID 19 Pandemic, a private funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa. The service will be livestreamed on the First Lutheran Church Facebook page and available with a link for future viewing. In her words, the service is "to be a celebration of music, family, love and friendships, God's creation and of the Lord, Jesus Christ, whose mission was to teach us how to love all creation, as God the creator does.

Margaret Jean Buettell was born on October 3, 1950 in Mitchell, South Dakota, to Robert Earle and Muriel Irene (Doane) Buettell. At an early age her family moved to Humboldt, Iowa and when she entered third grade they moved to Perry, Iowa where she graduated from Perry High School in 1968. She then attended college at Drake University, Iowa State University, and lastly at the University of Iowa receiving a degree in Anthropology. She married Glenn Arthur Bartelt on September 2, 1972 in Ames, Iowa. To this union one child was born, Jeremy.

While in college, Peggy had worked at the Natural History Museum in Iowa City. Upon her marriage to Glenn, they moved to Maquoketa where she worked primarily as a private music teacher.

Peggy was a very active member of First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa and had served as the youth choir director for many years. She loved music and was an accomplished musician who enjoyed singing, playing the flute, piano, and guitar, and composing songs for church and choir. Throughout the years she had dedicated her time and talents to numerous church music programs as well as performing in area volunteer bands and music organizations most notably "Flutes Unlimited", affiliated with the Quad Cities Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her love of music, her passion for natural history and anthropology was demonstrated in her visiting museums and participating in archeology digs.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Glenn Bartelt of Maquoketa, IA; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy and Kate Bartelt of Sioux City, IA; and 2 grandchildren, Mackenzie and Miles. She was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church.
