Sharyl A. Lopez was born on August 28, 1950 in Dubuque, Iowa, the youngest of three children to Vincent and Virginia (Oberbroeckling) Lopez. She grew up in Dubuque and attended St. Raphael's Grade School and was a 1968 graduate of Dubuque Wahlert High School. She married James "Jim" Hohnecker on June 24, 1972 in Dubuque, Iowa.
