A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 11 A.M., Thursday, May 9, 2019, at the United Church of Christ in Maquoketa. There is no visitation. Cremation has taken place and a private burial will be held at the Union Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, Iowa.

Sabra Sue Stout was born on November 28, 1940 in DeWitt, Iowa, to Glen and Florence (Harksen) Stout. At the age of three her mom died, and she was raised by her aunt Iva and Uncle Henry "Tootie" Smith whom she considered to be her parents. She was a 1958 graduate of DeWitt High School. She married Ronald E. Hovey on July 29, 1967 in Maquoketa, Iowa.

Prior to becoming a stay at home mom, "Sue" had worked in the billing and insurance department at the Jackson County Public Hospital in Maquoketa. In 1982, she and her husband Ronald opened Hov's Pub in Maquoketa. The restaurant quickly became a popular eatery and pub. They retired in October of 2006.

"Sue" was a member of the United Church of Christ in Maquoketa and the UCC Women's Fellowship. She enjoyed planting flowers, reading books and magazines, sports of all kinds, cooking and recipe collecting, decorating, and holidays. She especially enjoyed meeting and visiting with people.

Those left to honor her memory include three children, Ronelle (Jeff) Clark of Maquoketa, IA, Shane (Jodi) Hovey of Louisburg, KS, and Tyler Hovey of Maquoketa, IA; 5 grandchildren, Delaney Clark, Chance Dubinick, Sydney Clark, Jase Hovey, and Conlee Hovey; and a sister Terri Vetter of DeWitt, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents Glen and Florence (Harksen) Stout and Iva and Henry "Tootie" Smith, and her husband Ronald on October 27, 2008.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Sabra "Sue" Hovey memorial fund has been established.

I give my deepest sympathy and condolences to the Hovey family for the loss of their mother. Sue was always like a second mom to me while growing up in Maquoketa. I have so many good memories during my childhood with the Hovey family. Going to wrestling meets, cleaning Hov’s Pub every Sunday, football games, Sue’s great cooking and just growing up with Sue and her family. They were like my second family growing up. I have so many good memories with the Hovey’s. Sue always meant a lot to me and had a heart of gold. She will be deeply missed and never forgotten. Jim Sanger Jr.

Words sometimes seem so inadequate at times like these. Please know how deeply we are thinking of the entire family. As you cry the tears don't forget to smile and even laugh at the special memories you have. Your mom was unique in many ways. She created an everlasting tribute through her bloodlines as you carry the best of those memories forward and pass them down to the next generation. Sincerest sympathy and prayers to you all. Remember there are ones you can turn to if needed and we are always there for you.
