Harold James Staner Sr., 73, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, November 15, 2018, at the Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa, Iowa.
A celebration of Harold's life will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, November 20, 2018, at First Baptist Church in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M., Monday, November 19, 2018, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial will be at the Buckhorn Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, Iowa, with military honors.
Harold James Staner Sr. was born on December 1, 1944 in Monticello, Iowa, to Raymond Henry and Ardella Bernice (Koch) Staner. He was a graduate of Maquoketa High School and then entered the U.S. Army earning an honorable discharge. He married Lois LaRae Merrick April 1, 1967 in Maquoketa, Iowa.
Upon returning home from his military service, Harold began a 34 year career working at Alcoa Davenport Works. In retirement, he worked for Pacific Coast Feather Company in Maquoketa for several years.
Harold was a member of the First Baptist Church, Oxford Junction American Legion, and was a lifetime member of the Maquoketa VFW Post #3633 O'Connor-Regenwether. Additionally, he was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Club in Maquoketa serving as a past president and vice president. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing, especially for Catfish.
Those left to honor Harold's memory include his wife, Lois Staner of Maquoketa, IA; children, Veronica Barten of Maquoketa, IA, Jamie (Patty) Staner of Monmouth, IA, and Christine (Brian) Benhart of DeWitt, IA; a sister, Mary (Bill) Uppena of Potosi, WI; 10 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren and 2 special adopted grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Raymond Jr. and John Staner, a son Gregory Staner, and a son-in-law Scott Barten.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Harold James Staner Sr. memorial fund has been established.

I've known him for 30yrs or more.. he is so like a father to me! I remember him coming home from work and Christine and I would be cooking supper and he would always tells us " I sure hope it tastes good!" He was always there for us when we needed him. I did not know Harold personally, i only got to know him when he became ill. I do know how highly his kids spoke of him and respect they had for him.
Jamie, Ronnie along with the rest of the family. May you someday soon find comfort in knowing he is at peace and watching over you all. God grants all good men there wings and he knows our heart is never ready for them to fly. May God hold you all during this hard time. Remember you good times and laughter.

To the family and Lois, What a great loss he will leave us with, Harold was the type of man that would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it, always a smile, and such a hard working man(they named that word after him)..We all go back a long ways, from getting to know each other to Boy Scouts to 4-H and much more...Rest in peace now Harold and i am sure you are so happy to see all you're buddies and friends that went before you..Open up the gates heaven, here comes a great man for sure!
