Dealing with Grief
At Carson’s we know that the grief journey does not end when the services are over. We want you to know that we are always here for you. We offer a special aftercare program for Maquoketa area families with meetings in the fall/winter/spring.
Our grief support group is facilitated by Charlie Easterly, National Certified Counselor. Charlie has been the facilitator for our group since January of 2005.
Our grief support group is for adults who have experienced one or more losses. It is an opportunity to listen, share, and learn ways to work through the very tough work of grieving.
Our grief support group is not group counseling. It is an educational group in which participants support each other through the grieving process.
Every participant receives a copy of a book written by Alan Wolfelt along with a companion workbook and we usually have a guest speaker for one of our meetings.
Cathy Easterly, hostess and preplanning counselor at Carson’s, makes a special treat for each group and we always make sure to have your favorite bottle of pop or water on hand. Our groups are informal.
We also provide our families with AfterLoss, a monthly 8-page helpletter which gently guides the bereaved, step-by-step, through the grieving process toward recovery. Editor, Dr. Margie Kennedy-Reeves, states, “A monthly helpletter rather than a quarterly one better serves the needs of grief-stricken people or families.” Dr. Kennedy-Reeves, a highly respected, practicing thanatologist, was the crisis counsellor and facilitator of all of the bereavement classes at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California (the location of the Betty Ford Center and the Barbara Sinatra Child Abuse
The AfterLoss helpletters provide the same grief recovery information received in these bereavement classes and answers many questions asked during the classes. We take the class to the people through AfterLoss. The monthly helpletter teaches that grief is a process, not an event. Specific questions about loneliness or fear, guilt or anger and other topics are answered, bringing comfort, encouragement and most of all, insights about grief.
