    Allen's Obituary

Allen R. Hoerschelman, 74, of Andrew, Iowa, died on Saturday evening, February 16, 2013, at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque, Iowa.

A celebration of Allen's life will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, February 20, 2013, from the Salem Lutheran Church in Andrew, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M. on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, from the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa, Iowa. Burial will be at the Andrew, Iowa Cemetery.

Allen Ross Hoerschelman was born on March 15, 1938 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Harry Gottlieb and Bertha (Fuller) Hoerschelman. He grew up in Andrew and was a 1956 graduate of Andrew High School. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years and married Marianne Fuglsang on October 9, 1960 in Andrew, Iowa.

Allen farmed the century family farm in Andrew area for many years, retiring in 2006. He also worked as a school bus driver for the Andrew Schools during the 1960's.

Allen was a member of the Andrew AMVETS, Salem Lutheran Church in Andrew and had served on the church council. He was an active Andrew Community supporter and citizen and had served on the Andrew City Council, Andrew School Board, Andrew Saddle Club, was a 4-H leader and had been president of the Andrew Coop.

Allen liked to travel, listen to country music, go horseback riding, and play cards, particularly euchre and bridge. He loved spending time with this family especially around a bonfire, and was known as a very mechanical man who could fix anything.

Those left to honor Allen's memory include his wife, Marianne Hoerschelman of Maquoketa, IA; children, Gary (Darlene) Hoerschelman of Andrew, IA, Lori (Brad) Edaburn of Marion, IA, Lisa Dursky of Andrew, IA, and Jan (Adam) Pyatt of Mount Vernon, IA; 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; a brother, Eldon (Elaine) Hoerschelman of Bellevue, IA; and a sister, Gloria (Terry) Petesch of Bellevue, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother Charles.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, an Allen R. Hoerschelman memorial fund has been established.

The world lost a wonderful human being. Allen always had a smile on his face. I doubt there is anyone who didn't like him. Rest in Peace, Allen.

What a wonderful man Allen was, always the easiest person to know and love. Every time I would visit with him in person or over the phone he was a delight. I remember him either riding on a tractor, bicycle or in his truck all over his farm with a big smile on his face. Thank you for being my friend, your cousin Connie

I´m very sad. Allen gave the feeling to me to be an old friend, not a nearly unknown member of the family, living in Europe. He opened his house to me, he showed his home-region to me. Gloria, my father and me are thinking of you and your family in this sad moment.

Allen was so very kind and contagiously friendly. He was as comfortable as an old shoe to be around. An image of Allen that will remain with me forever was when he posed for a photo atop my horse here in Oregon, with an enormous grin and one hand high in the air.

To Allan's family-- So sorry to see him go. What a nice guy he was and never heard him complain or say a cross word. He was a bus driver and a guy who never made you feel a stranger. Praying for you in your time of loss, but know you will get to see him again in heaven. Gloria, I am thinking of you and praying for you too.

I'm thinking of all the wonderful family times we shared at my Grandparent's (Andy & Alice Bolte) farm, as a child with Allen, Eldon and Gloria as children. And then as adults the admiration I always had of the son, brother, husband, father and grandfather he was to all. God received a special angel when he greeted Allen into heaven. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Gary, Lori, Lisa, Jan and Marianne: What wonderful memories my children and I have of Allen! He was always there with a smile and hug! I remember so many times that he came to my rescue when, being the city girl that I was, got stuck somewhere with my car or just needed something done. What a wonderful man he was! You are all in my thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time.
