    Warren's Obituary

Warren D. Roberts, 72, of Des Moines, and formerly of Maquoketa, Iowa, died on Friday morning, October 19, 2012, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

A celebration of Warren's life will be held at 11 A.M., Tuesday, October 23, 2012, from the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M. on Monday, October 22, 2012 from the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa, Iowa. Cremation will follow the visitation and burial will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, Iowa.

Warren David Roberts was born on February 26, 1940 in Waterloo, Iowa, to Gwilym and Ethel (Bollard) Roberts. He grew up in Waterloo and graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1958. He then attended the University of Northern Iowa where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. He married Roseann Larkey on February 18, 1967 in Maquoketa, Iowa. She preceded him in death on March 1, 2005.

Upon graduation from college in 1963, Warren began a career in teaching, first in Wyoming, Iowa, and then from August of 1966 until May of 2002 he taught Business and Accounting in Maquoketa. During his 39 years of teaching he was involved in FBLA, BBA, MOC and AFS. Mentoring and Educating 1000s of Students.

He touched the lives of many students not only through his gift of teaching but also through his guidance and leadership in the Future Business Leaders of America Program and later Business Professionals of America Program. He spent countless hours with the students preparing and developing each team for events and conferences. He also was actively involved in the Maquoketa City Pool for 25 years.

Warren was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Maquoketa. Additionally, he had served as the Iowa FBLA State Chairman, BPA Chapter Advisor, MOC Teacher as well as an AFS volunteer.

Warren enjoyed time with others. A conversation, a serious talk or helping others talk through a decision. He was a teacher, advisor, friend and mentor to many. He enjoyed his grandkids immensely, making them laugh, watching them shoot hoops, being their biggest fan and just having some time with them. He was a father of tough love, although he would set his girls straight it was always with love.

Those left to honor his memory include his daughters, Lori (Chris) Knoebel of Des Moines, IA, and Sara Roberts of Des Moines, IA; and 4 grandchildren, Brittan, Jaden, Moriah and Benjamin. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, William, Gordan and Richard Roberts, and his wife, Roseann.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Warren D. Roberts memorial fund has been established.

Online condolences may be left at www.CarsonAndSon.com.

Praying for you today and in the days ahead. Both your parents left me many memories. One of which is the both of you. From the swimming pool, school, FBLA, and many other fond memories, they always had such positive thoughts of both of you. Your dad had a way of touching every person he came in contact with. Though he is gone from this earth, he lives on through you and your families. Hugs and prayers today and when you are feeling down, know I'm praying for you.

I was first introduced to your family when I helped at the pool when I was 12. "What time is it?......FREE TIME" I still catch myself saying this to my kids and always think of Mr. Roberts. As many have mentioned he was an amazing teacher and friend and many people like myself were forever influenced by his dedication to kids. I have vivid memories of the FBLA trips but my most favorite memories are those where we were at Camp Wyoming for a leadership retreat. Your entire family was there and your mom would cook for us all. I can still smell her spag and garlic bread! I remember having many conversations with him about my future and I will never forget the words he said to me convincing me to go on to college. I spent many hours in that classroom with him. We definitely have lost a great man, but I am sure he is smiling and having a great time because he had a wonderful life and lived it to the fullest with no regrets. Lori and Sara, you had a GREAT Dad. My prayers are with you both.

I not only had the privilege of having Mr. Roberts as a teacher and FBLA advisor during high school as many others have stated, but I also was able to call Lori my best friend through elementary and high school and even a semester of college. We spent many nights at each others' houses, especially around that table that means so much to many.

Lori and Sara, I'm sure you realize what a great impact your father had on so many people. I'm so happy I was able to be a part of so many memories that were shared tonight. I'm blessed to call this family my friends.

Love and prayers to you and your family always. Please keep in touch.

    Love,
    Sherry

    Lori and Sara,

My prayers are with you as you mourn the passing of your dad. Warren was a wonderful friend to our family throughout the years. It was always fun working with him at the many AFS fundraising activities. Your dad and mom always made time to do whatever they could to benefit kids. They always welcomed every student into their home and treated them as they would a member of the family. There aren't many teachers like Warren anymore who truly put their students' needs first. Your dad was a wonderful role model for the thousands of kids who passed through his classroom over the years.

    Lori and Sara,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. I have many wonderful memories of your dad from all our FBLA trips with some of the crazy stuff he use to do with my dad. Along with my dad he gave so much of his time to help me for different things like running for NCVP, Parliamentary Procedure or Mr. FBLA at Nationals and he didn't have to do that. He will be greatly missed and all his memories will help you get through this.

Lori, Sara and Family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time. We have many wonderful memories of your father and our times together in AFS. Because of his encouragement, we joined AFS and was introduced to a beautiful young lady from Brazil, whom to this day, remains a vital part of our family. Your father taught our daughter at Maquoketa and instilled a love for business in her. Please know we are praying for God's grace to guide you all through this difficult time. My deepest sympathy on the loss of your father. He was a great man. I have many special memories of our times in FBLA. There were some very funny times with him and Cliff. I remember a disney adventure where the two of them bought funny head pieces to wear throughout the park. Those memories will always be special to me. I hope that the memories you have of your dad will help ease the pain of your loss at this difficult time.

    Lori and Sara,
Our condolences on the loss of your father, a great friend and teaching peer. I made many trips on the FBLA charter bus to nationals with him, Roseann, you, and other Iowa competitors. He was so knowledgeable, passionate, and kind. I loved how he would laugh and the way he looked you in the eye as he chatted. The last time I saw him was at Sweet Things Bakery in Maquoketa. What a great man who will be missed by many.

Mr. Roberts, I hear your name and jumping right to mind is the Greyhound bus ride to Cincinnati for FBLA, only an amazing kind of man would spend hours and hours on a bus with a bunch of high school kids. I remember you telling us we better not get in trouble or we would be flown home at our parents expense. You were an awesome person that made the world a better place. You will be missed.

Mr. Roberts was the most influential teacher I had through HS. He was always in a good mood, smiling, and a great listener. Thoughts and prayers to your family. Rest in peace Warren.

I first met Warren as a "green horn" substitute at the Maquoketa High School. Subbing in the Business Department was one of the most enjoyable, experiences of my life. Warren and dear Sally, the other business teacher, gave me the courage to go back to school to get a high school endorsement so I could teach in a high school setting. I owe Mr. Roberts so much for his faith in me. It has been nearly 20 years since that experience and I cherish the years of friendship that followed. He was dearly loved and shall forever be missed.

Mr. Roberts you will be missed greatly. You were such an AWSOME teacher and I learned a lot from you in high school. I always enjoyed going to your class and you and Miss Felton helped me find a job at MSP! I will never forget that. As I teach at the high school now, I was in the office the other day and a former student of yours came in and asked for a room and she said "Mr. Roberts' old room.....I said Oh WDR!"
I have enjoyed seeing you out and about after high school. I think I approached you everytime and our talks lasted a while. I will miss seeing you around, but know that you have touched so many lives in a positive way!!
Thoughts and Prayers to your family. You will be missed dearly.

Mr. Roberts was one the most influential teachers I ever had. He was great in FBLA/BPA as well as actual classes such as Accounting and MOC. He always wanted the best for every student and everybody. He could also see the talent in each and every student, must notably to me, was myself. He called me out as an under achiever in high school, which I was as I could have put forth more effort and he knew it as did I. He continued to motivate after high school and helped me form into the person I am today. Thank You Mr. Roberts, I owe you one.

Warren (Mr. Roberts) Roberts, effected my life as much as anyone over the last 13 years. First he was my teacher, then my advisor, and then a friend and mentor. He spent countless hours with myself and other students for our BPA projects and team's but more than just that. He was also there for a listening ear, a place to go and was a friend to all who needed one. After high school he continued to be all of these things and then some to me. He was funny, caring and a great listener and took life in stride. I owe much to you, Mr. Roberts and I will miss you greatly. Thank you for everything

Warren Roberts made a huge impact on my life as well as countless others and while he was teaching business curriculum at Maquoketa HS as well as serving as the Faculty advisor for Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). He was one of the most influential teachers I had in HS that helped to spur me in the direction of a career in sales / business and spent countless hours developing our FBLA team , attending local and national conferences and coaching students / club members in our events and conferences.

I will never forget the early morning Parliamentary Procedure team meetings studying "Roberts Rules of order - Newly revised" or his encouragement and help in my campaign for state officer for FBLA my Junior year at MHS.

    He will be greatly missed.
